What kind of karate do you teach? We teach Sanshinkai, a form of American Karate based on Isshinryu Karate , Tae Kwon Do, Judo and Ju-jitsu, as well as other martial systems. I have a 3-year old son. Is he old enough for karate? Children who are at least 3 years of age, are "potty" trained and can follow simple directions are generally able to participate in our Little Dragons program. Can my 5-year old daughter take the family class with me? Most children are ready for the family Basics classes at age six, however some children, particularly those with older siblings and parents in the family class, may be ready as early as age 5. How often do you test for the next rank? We hold rank tests for Green belt and under 10 times per year. Purple Belt to First Brown tests are 4 times per year and Black Belt Tests are 2 times per year. Students completing the requirements of the next belt rank and pre-tested by Head or Chief Instructor may test at next designated test based on the rank. Does it cost anything to test for the next rank? There is a nominal cost to test, based on rank. This covers test preparation , pre-test, the cost of a new belt and AMAA certification of rank. How do I pay for my karate lessons? Annual payments may be made via check or credit card (Mastercard or Visa). Monthly payments are via automated bank draft (checking or savings account) or automatic credit card draft (Mastercard or Visa) only. Drafts are posted on the 5th of each month. How do I arrange for a "Stranger Danger" seminar for my child's class at school? Just give us a call and we can make arrangements to go to your child's school or other group at a time that is convenient for them. Groups may also come to the KI Clemmons School for this seminar. We conduct seminars as a community service, there is no charge. What is Goju Shorei? We are a qualified Goju Shorei Weapons School with classes and ranking available in a system featuring self defense training in the cane, knife, fan, and also Japanese restorative massage. When are the "family" classes? All of our evening Basic classes at 6PM are open to all ages. We have a number of families who train with us, and we encourage parent participation in class if they choose. We also offer Junior only and Adult only classes. (See Class Schedule) My child has ADHD. Can he take karate? The martial arts has long been recognized as helpful in improving focus and self discipline. We have students referred to us for training with improved attention and self control as a primary goal. How often do you have tournaments? We hold local tournaments 3 times a year with affiliated KI schools. These are friendly competitions, with learning and fun as the goal. Divisions are arranged so all competitors receive an award based on their placement in the competition. We belive in competition, because life is competitive, however it is another teaching tool for our students, not the primary focus of their training What is a "gi"? A karate training uniform. All students start with white. Do I have to come to all the classes? No. Your tuition covers unlimited attendance at any classes you are eligible for. You should try to average 2 classes a week minimum to stay on a good learning track. How long will it take to get my Black Belt? It depends on how often and seriously you are willing to train. We award rank based on acheivement and desire, not attendance. The minimum time required is a little more than 2 years. Only the most dedicated students can accomplish this, so your Black belt will take that time or longer. Do I or my child have to Spar? There is no rank requirement for Sparring through 1st Degree Black Belt. We encourage our students to learn sparring and it is taught in some classes, because we believe it is beneficial for improving self defense abilities. Are there academic requirements for Juniors? Juniors are expected to bring their report cards in for the Head or Chief Instructor to review. Students are encouraged to acheive a B average or better. Juniors must be on honor roll or equivalent to test for Black Belt.
